The easier question is which room in the house wouldn’t I put wicker or cane furniture into - and why just the house - it is brilliant in the garden or on the patio as well.

Conservatories

The rise in popularity of conservatories as a spacious, comfortable, airy room to sit and relax in, use as a dining room, extend the living room… well you get the picture, has revived the interest in wicker furniture.

People want comfortable, furniture which also helps to create a wow factor and that’s what wicker does.

It is available in suites with sofas, armchairs, rocking chairs, occasional tables, storage units, stools, even a chaise lounge if that is too your fancy. And that is the key - what is your fancy?

Is this room going to be formal or casual? And it isn’t often that you get the choice of styles, or materials for seat and back covers that wicker furniture offers.

Living Room

As wicker, cane or rattan furniture is available in suites it offers an alternative to the more conventional thee-piece. It has particular charm in smaller homes, or rural cottages.

It is also an ideal solution for the one-of which is sometimes needed - what about a rocking or swivel chair, a more compact armchair to fit in a corner, or a two-seat sofa that also gives more seating in a nook that will not accommodate a heavier upholstered couch.

Occasional tables are always handy and combinations of wicker and glass, for example, have great appeal, as well as practical use.

Having difficulty finding chair that looks good in the bedroom? A great deal of today’s furniture is too heavy or too bulky to fit the bill. But a comfy wicker chair wouldn’t look out of place in a bedroom of any style.

It’s also worth considering a small table, storage shelves… the possibilities are endless.

More and more people are appreciating the style and practicality of wicker or cane dining suites in their dining room, or in the conservatory.

The styles vary greatly and can feature round, rectangular or oval tops - with even the materials used for the tables tops giving a choice between rattan, glass and hardwood.

The Garden

Here rattan or wicker furniture comes into its own. It can transform any area, even a tiny back yard can become a secluded area to sit in and enjoy the sun over a cup of tea or glass of wine.

A good tip is to check with your supplier that the furniture you choose is suitable for outdoor use.

Once that has been established - well off you go.

But not any old dog basket what about a wicker dog basket on legs. Your family’s pet can be every bit as ‘swanky’ as the rest of the family with its own seat, raised on legs to ensure that any draughts that creep in under the door by-pass it.
