Care of Your Wicker Furniture

Because you wicker furniture is so lovely it is worth a little care and attention.

Getting it Home

You should treat wicker furniture with care. Although it will last for many years, it isn’t as sturdy as solid wood.

So, make sure the furniture is wrapped to protect areas such as edges, legs and arms where it could become damaged. Stack it carefully so that legs aren’t likely to be forced through the rattan seating or backs.

Don’t transport it on an open truck in a downpour - like indoor wood furniture it won’t appreciate it.

When you Get it Home

Applying a thin layer of clear lacquer will help to protect your furniture whether it is to be used inside or out. It could also help to protect from insect damage.

Ensure that you have protective covers for furniture that is to be used outside and for conservatory furniture, especially if there are no blinds to protect it from the heat and glare of the sun.

Because wicker furniture isn’t as robust as wood - it is a good idea to discourage children from jumping on it.

How to Clean

Just the nature of weaved furniture means that it will pick up dust. That can easily be removed by running a vacuum cleaner nozzle over it, or by dusting. Try a small patch that can’t be seen to test if using a clear furniture polish is a good idea.

If an area has become deeply soiled, wipe it over gently with mild soap and water.

Maintenance

If you discover any sharp edges sand them carefully with a fine-grade sandpaper.

If the furniture gets wet - dry it as quickly as you can to prevent cracking or gaps between the weave.

Watch for any sagging in the furniture or lose parts. If the wicker weave does start to unravel clipping off the excess piece could help it to stop unravelling as it won’t get pulled.

Having blinds installed in a conservatory will help to stop fading of the furniture and covers, and also reduce any tendency the wicker has to become brittle.

Wicker furniture is like everything else in your home the better you treat it and the more care you give it, the longer it will look good, and the longer it will last.
